link friday: torture is bad, coffee is good

Let’s start with the bad news!

Bad/sad/mad news
– The report on torture came out this week, and…well, we tortured people, at least 26 of which were “wrongfully held”. Also, we didn’t get any useful information from torturing people in finding Osama bin Laden, despite what the CIA had said.

But regardless of whether it works or not (which seems pretty clear: it doesn’t), torture is immoral and we as a country shouldn’t be doing it. People always talk about the “ticking time bomb” scenario (think “24”), but that’s extremely unlikely to happen in real life.

The Ferguson Masterpost: How To Argue Eloquently & Back Yourself Up With Facts is very long but has a lot of good ways of thinking about what happened.

– In case you missed it, the House released their report on Benghazi, and it turns out there was no scandal there! (remember, the House is controlled by Republicans) So…yeah. That’s a bit embarrassing, right news networks that “covered” the “scandal” incessantly?

This is why the middle class can’t get ahead – very few people get overtime pay anymore.

Good/neutral news
The Case for Drinking as Much Coffee as You Like – coffee is probably good for you, even separate from its caffeine! From the article:

In June, a meta-analysis of ten years of research went so far as to find an inverse association between habitual, moderate consumption and risk of heart failure. The association peaked at four cups per day, and coffee didn’t stop being beneficial until subjects had increased their daily consumption to beyond ten cups.

Ten cups a day!
