audition tonight

Tonight I’m auditioning to sing the Durufle Requiem and Handel’s Messiah this fall with David Stevens. Luckily, my voice has finally recovered from talking/singing pirate-y. Wish me luck!

Hipmunk is a brand new flight search engine that’s pretty darn cool. As you can see in this search page, it sorts by “agony” (a combination of when the flight leaves, number of stops, and price), and automatically hides flight combinations that are strictly dominated by others (i.e. arrives at the same time but you have to leave earlier). The main display is such a relief to read after doing searches on Orbitz, etc.

Here’s a depressing article about how Washington sucks without any good answers how to fix it.

  1. Two problems with Hipmunk: 1) No American flights? As I recall, they were chapest for DFW -> LAS, and I’m headed that way again first weekend of October. 2) Try mucking up the dates you wanted to pick. I figured out how to fix the problem, but it was definitely something that would blow the mind of an enduser.

    1. Hmm, weird, I guess they don’t have American? It must be a weird glitch…I thought I saw them before but I could be wrong. Yeah, it just launched two days ago, so there’s definitely some fine-tuning to be done. The results page just made me so happy 🙂

    1. It went well! As Gary hinted at, it was more of a voice lesson than an audition…but at the end I got in 🙂 Incidentally, he said he “had heard a lot about me” which was a little intimidating until I realized the large number of people I know that have sung with him…

      1. teeehee! I’ll be singing with ya on Messiah, but not sure about Durufle yet. Already on board at my church to sing Rutter Requiem about the same time. glad you’re “aboard”!!!

      2. Congrats! If you’d like, I can lend you my Messiah score (with Stevens/ASO markings) the next time you’re in Houston. Although since the markings are on the alto part, maybe you’d be better off buying your own. I highly recommend that you have Kinko’s cut off the binding and rebind it with a black cover and a spiral spine.

      3. Thanks! I actually have a copy of the Messiah already, so I’ll just copy over the markings at some point. Thanks anyway 🙂

      4. Get your pencil ready! For the ASO concerts, David gives a LOT of markings. Marcato on just about everything, mostly for enunciation. And crescendi and diminuendi pairs written out for messa di voce. It’s easier on the raw beginners for him to be explicit, but I think you’re experienced enough to take it all as given.
