seriously, is it election day yet?

Two things I forgot:
– Here are the Sarah Palin bits on Saturday Night Live which I couldn’t watch because of stupid KXAN and stupid Time Warner. The skits are pretty funny although Palin has a very small role in each. Also, at this point Tina Fey dressed up as Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin herself are indistinguishable to me.

– There’s some email going around about how if you want to vote a straight Democratic ticket you have to first do that and then separately vote for Obama. This is not true (selecting a candidate cancels the straight ticket vote). But, don’t vote a straight ticket because it’s kinda dumb. In any event, be sure to check your vote at the final confirmation screen before casting it!

    1. Do you listen to all the messages on your machine? Seems like you’re bound to get a fair number. We got tired of all the phone calls a while ago and ditched our landline.

  2. Unless you’ve checked out every candidate and all their competition, I agree that voting a straight ticket is dumb.

    1. I think it’s actually not that dumb. Say you support the Democrats, but there’s a good moderate Republican running against a somehow undesirable Democrat. A crossover vote might sound like a good idea, but really it’s a vote for a Republican majority, which gives Republicans control over things like committee chairmanships etc. And those power positions won’t go to the moderates, but to the conservatives that make up the party leadership. Even if in this election that’s not so much of an issue, there’s still the issue of giving filibuster power to a party that, again, is not run by the moderates. Plus the same logic applies to voting for a loser Democrat: s/he’ll be largely controlled by the party leadership. So if you support the party leadership (and/or oppose the leadership of the other party), voting a straight ticket is not a crazy choice.

      1. Sigh. You’re right, but I dream of a world where moderate Republicans are more liberal than conservative Democrats and vice versa.
